On October 13, 1972, a chartered Fairchild FH-227D aircraft departed from Montevideo, Uruguay, en route to Santiago, Chile. Carrying 45 passengers, including the members of the Old Christians Club rugby union team, the flight faced unforeseen challenges due to adverse weather conditions over the Andes.

The experienced pilot, Colonel Julio César Ferradas, and the inexperienced co-pilot, Lieutenant-Colonel Dante Héctor Lagurara, navigated through treacherous mountainous terrain. Tragically, Lagurara’s miscalculation led to a catastrophic crash, changing the course of the passengers’ lives forever.

Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 claimed the lives of three crew members and nine passengers immediately, while the survivors were left to endure extreme hardships in the unforgiving Andes.
